Celebrating National Clean Energy Action Month 2025

October 3, 2025 Dr. Julie Sessions, Curriculum Consultant

October is not just about pumpkins and spooky festivities; it's also National Clean Energy Action Month. This month is an excellent opportunity for educators to integrate lessons on clean energy, sustainability, and conservation into their classrooms, inspiring students to think critically about the environment and their role in protecting it. Below are some engaging activities and lessons for various grade levels, including a fun Halloween-themed activity.

Why Clean Energy Matters

Clean energy refers to power derived from renewable sources that produce little to no pollution, such as solar, wind, hydroelectric, and geothermal energy. Transitioning to clean energy is crucial for reducing greenhouse gas emissions and mitigating the impacts of climate change. It promotes healthier communities by reducing air and water pollution. Also, the clean energy sector is a growing field, offering numerous career opportunities for the future.

Now for Classroom Activities and Lessons!

To engage students with the theme of clean energy, here are some creative and educational activities tailored for various grade levels. These activities encompass sustainability, conservation, and the concept of smart homes.

K-5: Energy Explorers

Objective: Introduce young students to the concept of energy and its sources.

Activity: Solar-Powered Halloween Lanterns

Materials Needed: Small solar garden lights, jars, decorative Halloween stickers, and glue.

Instructions: Have students decorate jars with Halloween-themed stickers. Place a solar light inside each jar. Discuss how the sun can power the lanterns and the importance of using renewable energy sources.

Discussion Points:

  • What is energy?
  • Why is solar energy considered clean?
  • How can we use solar power in our daily lives?

Grades 6-8: Conservation Detectives

Objective: Help students understand the importance of conserving energy and resources.

Activity: Energy Audit Adventure

Instructions: Assign students to conduct an energy audit of their homes. They will check for energy-efficient appliances, inspect windows for drafts, and note the types of light bulbs used.

Follow-Up: Students will present their findings and suggest ways their families can conserve energy, such as switching to LED bulbs or using smart thermostats.

Discussion Points:

  • What is energy conservation?
  • How do smart homes help to conserve energy?
  • What changes can we make at home to save energy?

Grades 9-12: Smart Home Innovators

Objective: Encourage students to explore advanced concepts in clean energy and smart technology.

Activity: Design a Smart Home

Instructions: Students will design a model of a smart home using online tools or physical materials. They should incorporate elements like solar panels, smart lighting systems, and energy-efficient appliances.

Presentation: Each group will present their smart home design, explaining how it conserves energy and why these features are important.

Discussion Points:

  • What are the key features of a smart home?
  • How does technology contribute to sustainability?
  • What is the future of energy-efficient living?

Halloween-Themed Activity: The Haunted Energy Hunt

Objective: Make energy conservation fun with a spooky twist!

Activity: Create a scavenger hunt where students search for energy "ghosts" in the classroom, such as lights left on or devices plugged in unnecessarily.

Instructions: Hide clues around the school that lead to different "energy ghost" locations. Each clue contains a fun fact about energy conservation.

Reward: Students earn a treat for each energy ghost they "capture."

Discussion Points:

  • How can we eliminate "energy ghosts" at school and at home?
  • Why is it important to be aware of energy wastage?

Inspiring Future Clean Energy Leaders

By weaving clean energy themes into classroom activities and discussions during National Clean Energy Action Month, educators can empower students to become thoughtful stewards of the environment. These hands-on lessons not only build scientific understanding and critical thinking but also inspire a sense of responsibility and creativity. As students learn about the benefits of renewable energy, conservation, and smart technology, they gain the tools to make positive changes at home, in their communities, and in their future careers.
